Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) is a condition where fluid accumulates at the macula (the small central area of retina which gives our detailed or straight ahead vision), like a fluid blister. This can disrupt the photoreceptor cells in the macula and affect central vision. CSR more commonly affects males, and generally between the ages of 20 to 50 years. The cause of the condition is not known but is often associated with episodes of stress, fatigue and corticosteroid use (eg. asthma medications, steroid creams) in susceptible individuals.
While some patients report no symptoms or only mild blurring, others note distorted vision, micropsia (objects appearing smaller), or a significant blurred or grey central patch.
Diagnosis of CSR is with an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan and sometimes a fluorescein angiogram. The OCT is also very useful in monitoring the resolution or progression of the condition. Generally the condition is observed for three to six months, as many cases resolve spontaneously with vision returning to near or as good as the previous level. In a few cases photodynamic laser therapy or focal laser may be required to treat the fluid accumulation and improve vision.
