An Epiretinal Membrane is a thin layer of scar tissue that grows on the surface of the macula. This scar tissue may be due to the normal aging of the eye, or it may be due to previous retinal trauma (including simple vitreous detachment) or retinal tear. The membrane can cause the retina to “wrinkle”.
Epiretinal Membranes can cause decreased vision and distortion. However most epiretinal membranes remain relatively stable and do not require treatment.
Epiretinal membrane surgery is generally successful in removing the membrane and improving the distortion in vision. This involves removal of the vitreous gel and the membrane is then gently peeled off the surface of the retina. This treatment is only indicated in symptomatic patients who have a degree of visual loss, distortion or difficulty using the eyes together. It is expected that this surgery will stabilize vision at the very least, with approximately 70-80% chance of improving the level of vision, although slight distortion may remain. Vision will not be at its best until 12 months following surgery.
