Dr Waseem Henein is a Queensland-trained consultant ophthalmologist providing comprehensive eye care. He provides specialist care for patients requiring cataract surgery and medical treatment of retinal conditions.

Areas of expertise include:

  • Cataract assessment and surgery
  • Medical retina including macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinal vein occlusions
  • Intravitreal injection therapy
  • Laser treatments
  • Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
  • Pterygium surgery
  • General ophthalmic care

Dr Waseem completed his medical degree at Bond University on the Gold Coast. He then undertook specialist ophthalmology training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, working across major tertiary hospitals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

Following completion of his general ophthalmology training, he completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he gained extensive experience managing complex retinal conditions. During this fellowship he gained additional expertise in cataract surgery, including the management of both routine and complex cataract cases.

Dr Waseem also holds a Master of Medicine from the University of Sydney and has numerous academic publications and presentations, reflecting his ongoing commitment to academic excellence and evidence-based care. He holds a Consultant appointment at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Caloundra Health, where he contributes to the teaching and supervision of ophthalmology trainees, helping train the next generation of ophthalmologists. He is also a member of the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (AUSCRS).

Dr Waseem works closely with general practitioners and optometrists to ensure timely access to specialist ophthalmic care and clear communication with referring practitioners for coordinated postoperative follow-up. He is committed to a personalised approach and takes the time to ensure patients understand their eye condition and treatment options.

Outside of work, Dr Waseem enjoys spending time with his young family and is a keen tennis player.
